Tours Start September 22

Ever wondered where we keep all the things in our collections when they’re not on display in the museum or in use in the research room, two areas of the Ohio History Center that visitors normally see?

Find out on an exclusive tour with Ohio Historical Society curators who will take you behind the scenes. Each tour has a broad theme and will be led by curators who are experts in the subject. The 2012-2013 series starts Saturday, September 22, with a political-themed tour of the archives, Ohio in State and National Politics.

See Two Hundred Years of Political Memorabilia
Ohio politics are colorful and our state has long had a role on the national political stage. This tour will take you to rarely visited nooks in our archives stacks to see over 200 years of political memorabilia and documents with Tom Rieder, one of our senior archivists and a self-described “political junkie.” You’ll see campaign materials like election posters for Ohio presidents, but also evidence of how elections are run and democracy is conducted. Audiovisual curator Lisa Wood will show you photographs and newsreels documenting the campaign and presidency of Warren G. Harding.

The special tour, $99, is limited to 12 people. To register, click here or call 800.686.1541.

Visit Archaeology Collections in Storage and See What’s Not on Exhibit
Saturday, Oct. 6, tour the exhibit Following in Ancient Footsteps and our archaeology collections facility with Curator Brad Lepper and our archaeology staff. Get the curators’ perspective on the exhibit, then travel to our archaeology collections storage facility for a look at the many objects not on display. This special opportunity to see the facility where we store our extensive archaeology collection, conduct research and process in-coming collections is limited to 15 people. You’ll have a special opportunity to meet the staff who collect, catalog, study and — most importantly — educate us about these remarkable materials. To register for this exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Ohio Historical Society archaeology collections, $149, click here or call 800.686.1541.

For More Information
Both tours meet at the Ohio History Center at I-71 & 17th Avenue in Columbus, are from 1:30-4 p.m. and include light refreshments. For more information, call 800.686.1541 or e-mail

Tours in the works for spring 2013 will feature popular culture collections in the archives and the Ohio Historical Society’s extensive collection of Ohio-made, hand-crafted quilts.
