Although most of the American Civil War was fought outside of Ohio’s borders, more than 300,000 Ohioans served in the Union Army. The Buckeye State played a major role in determining the war’s outcome and the collections of the Ohio Historical Society contain thousands of items from this pivotal period in the state’s history.
In celebration of the Civil War Sesquicentennial commemoration, in full swing now through 2015, the Ohio Historical Society is officially offering behind-the-scenes tours of its Civil War-related collections to the public—many of the objects having never been seen before by visitors.
Participants get an exclusive, guided tour through the Ohio Historical Society’s Civil War objects and collections that aren’t on exhibit and are stored in areas not open to the public. This tour focuses on the flags, weapons, military accessories and clothing related to the Civil War era in and around Ohio.
“It’s a very special tour that allows participants to experience the real stuff of Civil War history,” said Jason Crabill, manager of Curatorial Services. “Folks will have a chance to sample traditional soldier food, hold real historic military equipment and smell the remnants of actual campfire smoke as our curators share the stories behind the collection pieces and talk about preserving and caring for these treasures of Ohio’s past.”
Each Sneak Peek tour is limited to 6-12 participants. The intimate, two-hour tour experience will start from the Ohio Historical Center and lasts about 2 1/2 hours.
Cost is $150 per person. The tours will be held on July 21, 6:30-9 pm and on July 30, 1:30-4 pm. Registration is required and is on a first-call basis. For more information or to register for this one-of-a-kind opportunity to explore Ohio’s Civil War past, call 800.686.1541.
