Chronicling America’s 5 Millionth Page!

More Ohio Newspapers Now Available on Library of Congress Website

Chronicling America just added its five millionth historic newspaper page! With this latest update to the Library of Congress website, over 5.2 million pages from 801 newspapers representing 25 states are keyword-searchable and freely-available. The new content includes issues from the following Ohio papers (click to browse the paper at Chronicling America):

These titles join over 35 others from Ohio to chronicle United States history from 1836 to 1922. Over the coming months, the Ohio Historical Society will contribute even more of Ohio’s historical newspapers to the National Digital Newspaper Program and Chronicling America through the National Digital Newspaper Program in Ohio.

This excerpt from the May 11, 1865 issue of the Dayton Daily Empire tells a “Strange Story About Mr. Lincoln” in which his wife predicted that he would not live through his second presidential term (p. 2, col. 3). Click the article to read the whole story!

Never been to Chronicling America and wondering how to get started? Check out the “Using Chronicling America” Podcast Series to learn how to search and browse the website. This 11-episode series was created by the staff of the Ohio Historical Society in collaboration with the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Humanities and is available through the Ohio Digital Newspaper Portal, a resource that connects you to Ohio’s digitized newspapers.

The National Digital Newspaper Program is a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress and state projects to provide enhanced access to United States newspapers published between 1836 and 1922. NEH awards support state projects to select and digitize historically significant titles that are aggregated and permanently maintained by the Library of Congress. As part of the project, the Ohio Historical Society contributed 100,000 newspaper pages to the project over a two year period ending June 2010 and will contribute an additional 100,000 pages by the end of August 2012.
