Help needed for World Heritage List Nominations

Ohio is poised to take its place on a new world stage. With your help, several Ohio landmarks could be ranked alongside Stonehenge in England, the Acropolis in Athens and the Grand Canyon.

Ohio citizens and organizations now have the opportunity to write letters of support to the National Park Service to help ensure the four nominations of archaeological and historic properties are included on the World Heritage List, an honor given to natural and cultural sites with significance to all people of the world.

The four Ohio nominations, the most for any state, represent 14 historic and prehistoric sites, include five that are managed by the Ohio Historical Society. The National Park Service is now recommending three Ohio nominations:

THE HOPEWELL CEREMONIAL EARTHWORKS, a multi-site nomination consisting of Hopewell Culture National Historical Park’s five ancient earthworks in Ross County, including the Ohio Historical Society’s Seip Mound, Newark Earthworks in Licking County and Fort Ancient in Warren County.

SERPENT MOUND in Adams County, a state memorial administered by the Ohio Historical Society.

DAYTON AVIATION SITES, another multi-site nomination comprising Huffman Prairie Flying Field at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Wright Cycle Company, the Wright and Wright Printing office, the Wright Flier III at Carillon Historical Park, and the Wright Home and Hawthorn Hill.

The Fourth nomination, Underground Railroad sites in Ripley, was recommended for future consideration. We need to urge that this nomination be added to the recommended list as well as keeping the other nominations on the list.

Don’t wait! Comments must be received by November 30, 2007. Find out how you can help at http://www.ohiohistory.org or by visiting www.ohiohistory.org/sn/103107.html.

Thank you for your support,
